#8 THE MOUNT FROM WHICH GOD SPOKE

A man once asked, "If there is a God, why doesn't he just speak out to all of us so we will know he is there and he can tell us what he expects of us." The Israelites were approaching Mt. Sinai after their release from bondage in Egypt and the voice of God boomed out to them. The people were terrified and urged Moses to beseech God not to speak to them directly, but to speak to them through Moses.

Could you imagine what it would be like to suddenly hear the voice of God? There are ways that God speaks through nature that terrify us. The rain-filled wind of a hurricane is devastating. The wind and hail of a tornado bring awesome terror. The shaking rolling motion of an earthquake causes us to drop to our knees in prayer. We, like the Israelites, would plead with God not to speak directly to us.

Let us look at Hebrews Chapter 1:1-3. "In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things and through whom he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God's Glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word." [NIV] Not only did God send his Son to communicate his word to us, he sent him to be the sacrifice for our sins. In the most gentle and loving way God communicated with his creatures without scaring them with his powerful voice.

Through Jesus, God communicated to mankind that love is the most powerful force on earth, and that He, himself, is Love. He redeemed us by the blood of his Son from our sins by letting him become sin for us. God verified the word that Jesus spoke: "We must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard so that we do not drift away. For if the message spoken by angels was binding, and every violation and disobedience received its just punishment, how shall we escape if we ignore such a great salvation." [Heb. 2:1-3]

The voice from Mount Sinai was fulfilled in the voice of God's Son, whose message was fulfilled from Mt. Calvary.
